I love shooting with Alex and Chloe. These are some images from our editorial shoot last month. It was the first time in a while that I had gotten to shoot outside in full sun. Shooting outside has its plusses and minuses - I love the organic nature in which I am able to shoot so freely, but on the other hand, there are such unpredictable elements everywhere. I really have to keep on my toes, but its a great challenge. Im really happy with what we got - sexy, casual summer with undertones of a gothic nature.

Here are a couple of shots from a shoot I had with one of my faves, Sophie! The first we shot in my new studio. I love a soft 3/4 profile. Just clean and classic. The second, we went outside along the metro tracks - We got a good 10 - 15 minutes worth of shooting before one of the train conductors reported us.

This months Advocate Magazine featured a story called A Day in Gay America. They were looking for very casual candid shots of everyone involved, which included actors, writers, musicians and everyday citizens. I photographed, in a reportage style, Del Shores and Rip Taylor for the story.

Love Never Dies

I have two photographs included in a group show entitled “Love Never Dies,” at Form+Content Gallery in Minneapolis, MN. The images I'm showing are from a new series showcasing LGBTQ community members over the age of 50. This international group exhibition explores the themes of marriage, family, relationships, aging and generational change in the LGBTQ communities. The opening reception will be held on June 5th, 2010 from 7-10pm at Form+Content Gallery and Traffic Zone Gallery. ”Love Never Dies” is produced with an additional curatorial contribution by The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. I have two photographs in "Love Never Dies," a group show at Form+Content Gallery in Minneapolis. The show is presented in conjunction with with Traffic Zone Gallery, Minneapolis with additional curatorial contributions by Walker Art Center.
The show opens on June 5th. My pieces will be at the From+Content Gallery.
The two images that I am presenting are from a very new body of work about Aging in the LGBTQ Community. It's all very exciting. Email me for the press release.

New Orleans

My husband and I recently took a trip to New Orleans. I brought my Hasselblad with some old expired film I had sitting around as well as my Lumix. I thought I'd take a couple rolls of film to supplement the thousands of digital shots I usually snapped. I figured since it's New Orleans, I owed it to myself to shoot film. When I arrived, and my digital camera's battery was drained, I was surprised to see I hadn't brought my charger. I tried to buy one, but $40 for a $10 charger seemed a little extreme. It was a rather happy accident as I was now free to shoot solely with my Has. I shot 12 rolls of 120, but could shot so much more. I had forgotten how expensive it was to process film! I miss the good ol days of running hundreds of rolls of film for free at school. It was great being forced to consider what I was shooting and having to take a breath before just pointing a digital and firing away. I think I saw a lot more of New Orleans with my film camera as opposed to my digital, and I ended up with some really beautiful color shifts from the expired film. Here are a few shots.

When I got to her place, she showed me her giant costume rack, and there was construction going on. Shes such a funny girl, we had to have a little fun.

My favorite story of Greg's was about how he if he ever had a name tattooed over his heart, it would have to be his own. Since he didn't want to seem too self centered, he had his nickname tattooed there instead...G-Spot. My favorite tattoo of Greg's must be the flamingo's in place of the more traditional Sparrows on his chest. I photographed Greg, who works at High Voltage and can be seen on LA Ink, with my Hasselblad and printed this image in the darkroom. Oh, I just love being in the darkroom with those smelly chemicals.

I've been wanting to do a black and white shoot with a single light and more contrast than I'd normally use. I wanted to really concentrate on shapes, posture and mood, keeping the portraits very simple and beautiful.

December 2008: The Advocate

Here is a shot I did for The Advocate last time I was in New York. I really love shooting in New York. Its like - walk outside and boom - instant awesome location.

This is Perry Moore and Hunter Hill. They co-directed the film Lake City. Really great guys. Super kind. The out-take I included is one of my favorites in a while. It was just a test shot, but it really shows this teams diversity with Perry's effervescent attitude and Hunters cool calm and collected demeanor.

Billy Raftery is the founder of childrenrise.com and created the film Give Us This Day, a five year long journey documenting the street kids of Durban.

My image leads off the portfolio and story of 2008 DoGooders.

We shot this on a small street in Santa Monica. I've included the lower image which was an out-take.

It was a low key shoot with natural light from the giant windows in front and a little flash fill.

The accessories I shot outside in a white tent. The ladies were rad and all their stuff was really beautiful. It was all very organic and green which was awesome.

In this Novembers Advocate, I have a portrait of a married couple for their "Love Stories" story about married same-sex couples. These guys were great, and their backyard was right out of a book.

November 2008: Orange Coast Magazine

This month I have an image in Orange Coast Magazine. It was a really tough assignment, but I think it really gave me some tools to be a better photographer. I was assigned to ride an Amtrak commuter train and photograph people.

Basically the story about was about how crowded the trains are now that so many commuters are looking to alternate modes of transportation. Also, about how the cafe car, mostly on Friday afternoon commutes, turn into something more like a corner bar at happy hour, filled with friends and tons of bitty bottles of scotch. Everyone has a blast in the cafe car.

I rode from LA to San Juan Capistrano...twice. It was a very different way to shoot, but allowed me to be more free...and constrained at the same...and tested my ability to ask complete strangers to have their photo taken. I was shooting with a 30mm lens, but would have perfered something a bit wider, as space on a train is rather lacking. Overall I was really surprised at how willing most people were. It helped the process quite a bit. Here are a few out-takes from the trip.

Here is a tear-sheet from the most recent Paper Magazine (Sept. 08). This is a shot from Royal-T, a super cool cafe, art gallery, and shop. Its inspired by Japanese pop culture and super "kawaii." The cafe servers all dress in sexy maid outfits like something out of the book "Fruits" and all of the art is behind bullet-proof plexi making for an interesting viewing experience.

Here is my latest tear-sheet from the August issue of Paper Magazine. I had the pleasure of photographing Summer Bishil who will be staring in the new Alan Ball film Towelhead as well as another film called Crossing Over. I didn't have much time with her, as is so often the case, but we managed to squeeze out two looks in three locations, which was great. She was super sweet and I had a great team to work with. Later, I'll upload a couple out-takes from the shoot.

Here are two tear sheets from shoots I did for Black Book. First is of Cheryl Hines who was amazing. Totally hilarious. The second is of Dimtri - the maitre di of The Sunset Tower bar. He was really...well, unlike any I'd ever met before. So courtious with something slightly quirky about him. Notice his foot in the picture. It's one of my favorite moments of any picture I've taken. He really would be the perfect butler, though I think he needs a butler to take care of him for a change.

This is from my first Advocate Shoot. September of 2006. It was a fun shoot I did of gay twin brothers who were a singing duo. The shoot was filmed for their reality show, but the shoot didn't make it on air. Too bad, cause I dressed really cute in my white jeans and teal Ben Sherman polo.

These are two portraits I did for The Advocate's Pride Issue. The article dealt with homosexuality and faith. The first image was the article leader and a full page with very little text - always a big plus! Dave, the man in the first image studies Kabbalah and has an arsenal of the most amazing stories about his experiences...or lack there of...with Madonna. Skip's faith is Agape. A church based in Los Angeles accepting of everyone.

Flaunt Magainze: I shot a portrait for the current issue of the inventor of a musical instrument.

I also recently shot two more portraits for The Advocate, hitting stands in a couple of weeks.

I will post pictures from each issue once they are available and on the stands.

Another project I've been working on is doing the cinematography for a good friends short film. He's a brilliantly talented screenwriter and I am so thrilled to be working with him. No further info on this project for a while.

I will be taking meetings in New York, showing my portfolio and shooting for a couple of weeks beginning May 5th.

I was taking this black and white class and met a girl who told me about bike polo. I was a little confused at first, but after talking to her for a while I got it - bike polo - like horse polo, but on bicycles...oh, and they play on blacktop, none of this wimpy grass stuff! I recently took a Black and White printing class - It was a great way to get back into the darkroom, without having to turn my bathroom into a chemical store-room. It felt so good to be back in the dark and have my hands covered in developer and fix. Watching the image comes up in the chemistry really is a sight to see and just doesn't lose its romance. These are images I printed from film I shot in three different subjects homes. I found 2 subjects online and 1 was referred to me. With all these shoots, I went in blind, never having a face to face meeting, never having seen the environment and bringing nothing but my Hasselblad a a few rolls of film.
